Period-Luminosity Relation for Type II Cepheids

We have estimated JHKs magnitudes corrected to mean intensity for LMC type II Cepheids found in the OGLE-III survey. Period-luminosity relations (PLRs) are derived in JHKs as well as in a reddening-free V I parameter. The BL Her stars (P < 4 d) and the W Vir stars (P = 4 to 20 d) are co-linear in these PLRs. The slopes of the infrared relations agree with those found previously for type II Ceph...

Period-luminosity and period-luminosity-colour relations for Mira variables at maximum light

In this paper we discuss the evidence for a period-luminosity (PL) relation and periodluminosity-colour (PLC) at maximum light for Mira variables. We confirm the existence of such relations in the J, H and K bands, and also based on bolometric magnitudes, for oxygen-rich (O) and carbon-rich (C) Miras in the LMC. We demonstrate that in the J and H bands the maximum light PL relations have a sign...

Remodelling colour contrast: implications for visual processing and colour representation

Colour contrast describes the influence of one colour on the perception of colours in neighbouring areas. This study addresses two issues: (i) the accurate representation of the colour changes; (ii) the underlying visual mechanisms. Observers viewed a haploscopic display in which a standard display was presented to one eye and a matching display to the other. The matches could be represented ac...

Spin-Up of Low Luminosity Low Mass X-ray Binaries

We examine the spin-up of low luminosity, low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) to millisecond pulsars (MSPs). In the conventional spin-up model of the Ghosh & Lamb type, where the stellar magnetic field interacts with the Keplerian accretion disk, MSPs could be produced from LMXBs if magnetic field B∗ <∼ 10 8(Ṁ/1016g/s)1/2G, where Ṁ is the mass accretion rate. However, for Ṁ < Ṁc ∼ 10 g/s accretion ...

The radio luminosity of persistent X-ray binaries

We summarise all the reported detections of, and upper limits to, the radio emission from persistent (i.e. non-transient) X-ray binaries. A striking result is a common mean observed radio luminosity from the black hole candidates (BHCs) in the Low/Hard X-ray state and the neutron-star Z sources on the horizontal X-ray branch. This implies a common mean intrinsic radio luminosity to within a fac...
